Congratulations to the World of Baseball 14u team on their championship in the USSSA
Lake City Freezeout. The boys outscored the opposition 42 - 13 and committed only 3 errors in 4 ballgames.
In game one of pool play, WOB jumped out to a 10 - 1 lead over the
Ocala Blaze before holding on for a 10 - 8 victory. Gavin Niquette started
the game earning the victory with 3 innings pitched, punching out 3 hitters and
giving up 1 hit and no earned runs. Rollin Layton picked up the save helping
the WOB hold on to the victory. Paul Sheffield led the WOB offensive
attack with a triple and double on the day. Rollin Layton had a towering
2 -run double to deep center field and Gavin Niquette also had an RBI double.
Sammy Layfield also had a multiple hit day for WOB with a double and single.
Other players contributing to the offensive attack were Austin Aman,
Archie Brooke, and Dalton Jeffords. In Game 2 of pool play, WOB jumped all over the East Coast Mafia 15 - 0 in 4 innings. This victory gave WOB a #1 seed for the playoffs and a 1st round bye. Paul Sheffield silenced the Mafia bats with 3 shutout innings, 3 k's and 0 runs. Austin Altman pitched a perfect 4th inning to seal the deal. Gavin Niquette led the WOB onslaught with a 2-run triple and 2 singles. Wyatt Petrey also had a multiple hit day with a 2-run double and single. Justin Duff had an RBI double to round off the extra base hitters on the day. Other WOB players contributing with RBI's were Austin Aman, Austin Altman, and Dalton Jeffords. In the semi-finals, WOB earned a much tougher victory over the Mafia, defeating them 7 - 3. Starting right-handed pitcher Wyatt Petrey pitched a fantastic game. He tossed 6 innings with 6 K's, giving up 5 hits and 2 earned runs. The key to this victory was Wyatt's ability to hold the Mafia to only 1 run in the first inning. The Mafia scored a run and had the bases full with only one out. He settled down and dominated the Mafia bats the rest of the way. Luke Dill closed the game out with a solid 7th inning earning the team a trip to the championship game. Big hits in this game were Garrett Hays bunt single advancing runners and allowing Justin Duff's 2- run single. Luke Dill also had a big 2-run double on a drawn in Mafia defense. Austin Altman contributed with a RBI single along with multiple singles from Wyatt Petrey. Sammy Layfield finished off the hitting attack with a single. In the Championship game, WOB was trailing 2 - 1 to an ultra-talented Heat team going into the 4 inning. WOB broke this championship game open with 6 runs in the bottom of the 4th. Gavin Niquette led the inning off with a single to right field. Rollin Layton followed his 2nd inning solo home run with a RBI double in the 4th tying up the Heat 2 - 2. Sammy Layfield was walked and Garrett Hays hit a go ahead RBI single scoring Layton and WOB never looked back after that. Fireworks continued in that inning when Justin Duff hit a 2-run double to left- center field and Austin Altman followed suit scoring Duff with an RBI double. In the 5th inning, Rollin Layton led the inning off with his 2nd homerun of the night and 2 batters later, Garrett Hays dropped a solo shot. The game ended via the mercy rule when Wyatt Petrey drove a ball to deep center field scoring Luke Dill. The story of the night, however was starting pitcher Rollin Layton. He had a night that he will never forget. In addition to his 2 homeruns and double, Rollin managed to toss a no-hitter with 5 strikeouts in a very dominating performance under the lights. Congratulations to the boys. Every member of that team made contributions this weekend. They prepared hard for this event and stayed locked in all weekend. Good job WOB 14U!!! |
